During Ricky Skaggs’ induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame on Oct. 21, a number of artists—including Garth Brooks and Dierks Bentley—paid tribute to the country/bluegrass icon by performing songs from Ricky’s vast catalog.
Perhaps the most powerful performance of the evening came from Chris Stapleton, who put his pipes to “The Darkest Hour Is Just Before Dawn,” a tune penned by bluegrass legend Ralph Stanley.
Before Ricky included a rendition of the song on his 1999 album, Soldier of the Cross, he and Emmylou Harris performed the song as a duet on her 1980 album, Roses in the Snow.
